Tournament Format
In the group stage, 24 national teams are split into six groups of four. Each side plays three round-robin matches, and the points accumulated form the group table: the top two finishers in each group advance to the knockout stage, along with the four best third-placed teams.

Spain holds the competition record with four titles (1964, 2008, 2012, 2024), while Germany has won it three times. One of the tournament's most unexpected triumphs came in 1992, when Denmark — added to the tournament just weeks before it started, replacing a suspended Yugoslavia — won the whole thing without ever being considered a favorite. Portugal's 2016 title was similarly surprising: the team drew three of its group matches before gradually finding its form in the knockout stage and beating host nation France in the final.
